Symplocarpus foetidus skunk cabbage

Skunk cabbage is the very first plant to bloom in early spring.  Its flower mass is hidden under a horn-shaped purplish or yellow-green hood and maybe difficult to see.  The leaves of the plant look similar to those of cabbage and tend to cover large areas of wetland habitats.  If any part of the plant is even slightly bruised, it gives off a rank smell reminiscent of that of a disturbed skunk.

Common in moist woods, swamps, and bogs.

Present throughout the state.
