The genus name Pogonia comes from the Greek "pogon" which means bearded referring to the bearded tongue on the flowers. Flowers are pollinated by bumble bees that stick their head back to the rear of the flower to get to the nectar. As the bee is nectaring a sticky sack of pollen is attached to it via the dark pollinium disk at the back of the flower.
