A conspicuous plant with egg-shaped flower heads found in open fields and meadows. A multitude of purple flowers covers the bristly flower heads. The slender, paired leaves hug the stem. Dried flowerheads are rather beautiful and persist on the stems throughout the winter.

Found in meadows, fields, and disturbed habitats.
Present throughout the state.
