Wintergreens (or pipsissewas) are rhizomatous, evergreen subshrubs that are somewhat woody at the base.  Leaves are thick, leathery, and sharply toothed.  Flowers are 5-merous in sparse umbels or corymbs.

The genus name is derived from Greek words for 'winter' and 'loving'.
