A trailing low shrub up to 6 in high. Leaves overwinter and have a delicate, aromatic scent.  The leaves can be spotted against dead brown tree leaves, among which their trailing hairy stems are rooted.  Flowers are mostly white, sometimes pink with a sweet scent, appearing in early spring.

The range is from Canada southward across the eastern U.S.
