Phloxes are upright or creeping herbaceous perennials with mostly opposite, smooth-margined leaves.  Flowers have a narrow corolla tube and abruptly spreading lobes with stamens inserted within the tube at uneven heights. Fruit is a 3-valved capsule with  1 to 4 seeds per locule.
