The petals of this gentian always remain closed.  The majority of the tubular, erect flowers are clustered at the top of the stem.  Closed gentian is a late summer plant starting to bloom in late August and through October.

Frequent in moist, open woods, stream banks, and meadows in noncalcareous soils.

Present throughout the state.
