Climacium dendroides (palm tree moss)

  Less common than C. americanum, does not have the same small lobes at the base, plants not as dull and tend to be upright.  Has shorter, more rounded capsules than C. americanum.

I have found this moss trailside in the rich lowland areas of Mosquito Valley, Lycoming County, under oak, maple, tuliptree, and basswood.  It is quite striking on account of its size and dendroid aspect.  A handsome bryophyte.
