Grows in rich, moist forests in colonies and spreads vegetatively through spreading rhizomes. Each plant has basal leaves on separate stalks heart to kidney-shaped. The singular flower is on its own stalk with 3 triangular petal-like sepals with elongated tips.

Grows in rich, moist woods and wooded floodplains.

Present throughout the state except some central counties.

Flowers late April through May.

Leaves  two basal per plant, on separate stalks, kidney or heart-shaped with a deep cleft at the base and a pointed tip.  The underside is covered with soft hair.

Fruit  capsule containing many seeds.

Flower  single per plant, low to the ground. Outside is covered in long white hairs, tubular structure with three dark red triangular sepals.
