Maidenhair ferns are one of the most graceful, beautiful, and easily recognized ferns.  Black or dark purple stems support the lacy fan-shaped blade.  Sterile and fertile fronds of these ferns are the same.  Fronds tend to grow in patches and may cover an area.  Veins are free and forking but without networks.
