The dodder pierces its host with a modified root called a haustoria. At that point the dodder becomes parasitic drawing its' nutrients from its' host plant. When that happens the part that came out of the soil dies and falls off. The dodder is now completely dependent on its' host plant.

The flowers have inward curved tips on the petals.

Cuscuta species are holoparasites.
