Verbesina alternifolia (Wingstem Crownbeard)

This perennial daisy-like plant is quite weedy and tall and easily forms vegetative colonies. The stem is usually winged and unbranched other than near the top where the infloresences occur. The flowerheads have ragged appearance and daisy-like structure. The blooming period is from late summer to mid fall, an unusual time for sunflower-like members of the aster family. The flowers have a mild, fragrant scent and are pollinated by bees.

Wingstem grows in full sun or light shade and needs moisture and soil that is high in organic matter.
