Rhizomatous perennial herb forming large carpet-like colonies on the forest floor. Tightly-packed small flowers are of gentle white in the shape of stars, arranged in spike-like racemes at the top of the stems.

Flowers May through early June.
Characteristics
Flowers spike-like raceme at the top of the stem. Each flower has 4 white petals and 4 white stamens with creamy tips.
Leaves one leaf on sterile plant; two or three on fertile plants, of slightly different sizes. Leaves are cordateor , pointy, glabrous, and entire; parallel veins along the length of the leaf.
Fruit green berry that turns dark red in late summer.
