This European species has a full, large flowerhead and rigid, yellow-tipped spines of the bracts that support the flowerhead. The prickly leaves are pale or wooly beneath.  This thistle is designated as a noxious weed.

Grows in meadows, fields, and along roadsides.

Present throughout the state.
