Characteristics
Flowers numerous flowerheads in clusters at tips of stems and upper leaf axis, may droop during development. Flowerheads have no petals, just the greenish-yellow disk that slightly exceeds the involucre.
Leaves simple, alternate, oblong and pinnately lobed; up to 4 in long. The lower leaves are larger and less lobed, stalked. As leaves go up the stem they become smaller, more lobed and stalkless.
Stems hollow, heavily branched, green to light purple in color.
Fruit brown achenes, each with a tuft of light brown hairs that get carried off by the wind.
