Plants in the colchicum family are herbaceous with creeping rhizomes & alternate, simple leaves with smooth margins and parallel veins.  Flowers are either solitary or in a small terminal umbel, radially summetrical with 6 tepals and 6 stamens. Flowers are pollinated by insects.  Fruits are either capsuels or berries.
