This plant is native from South Caroline to Kansas and south to Texas and Louisiana, and has become adventive in PA.  Current populations are in the very south-east and Allegheny county.  Floating seedbox has invasive tendencies and can be highly abundant in a locality.

Stems of this plant float at or below surface and can extend to several meters in length.  The bright yellow flowers on long stalks stay above the water.

Infrequent but can be locally abundant in shallow water or silty muddy shores.
