Save To MyPlantsHighly prevalent native rhizomatous, emergent aquatic perennial that occurs throughout the state. Stiffly erect, keeled leaves grow up to 1 m long. The inflorescence is typically branched. Female flowers are borne directly in the axils of bracts, with the male flower heads above the female heads. When growing in deep water, American bur-reed is unlikely to flower and some leaves might float at the tips.
Habitat & Range
Grows in shallow waters of lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and swamps, and on muddy shores.
Present throughout the state.

Phenology
Flowers late May to August.
Fruiting occurs from July to September.
Characteristics
Inflorescence branched with female flower heads occuring in the axils of reduced leaves and male flower heads above the female.
Leaves stiffly erect and keeled, sterile shoots produced later in the season tend to have wider leaves.
