This fern likes to grow on rock surfaces and closely resembles common polypody in most features forming dense, creeping colonies.  The blades of this fern are widest near the base, lobes with narrowed tips, and uniformly colored, golden-brown rhizome scales. 

Common on ledges and cliffs of rocky outcrops, sometimes in rocky soils.

Range is from England to Minnesota down the Appalachians to Georgia.
