Thelypteris

Thelypteris marsh fern

This genus used to contain 3 species in our state.  Based on recent genetic studies, New York fern was moved to genus Amauropelta and bog fern to genus Coryphopteris. Marsh fern (Thelypteris palustris) remain in the genus.  These three ferns still share the same morphological characteristics. All have fronds that are cut into pinnae and then into lobes, with smooth margins.  Stipes are straw-colored and a little bit scaly, rhizomes slender and creeping.  The sori are round and attached to the veins on the undersides of the leaflets.
