Small-flowered perennial herb with yellow petals.  The achenes of this plant have long hooked beaks that make it easy to differentiate from other native buttercup species.

Grows in rich, low woods.

Flowers May through July.

Flowers  up to 1/2 in across, 5 narrow triangular yellow petals; 20 yellow-tipped stamens surrounding the bright green center; 5 greenish sepals are about the same length as petals and bend back away from the flower.

Basal leaves  simplelobed, or deeply divided into 3 to 5 parts; long petioles

Cauline leaves  similar to basal leaves, alternate.

Stems and petioles pubescent; stems erect and branched.

Fruit  round seed head, smooth seeds with a hook at the tip.
