A small, deciduous understory tree growing up to 40 feet.  White stripes traverse greenish-brown bark on this graceful tree both on the trunk and twigs, making it easy to recognize in the winter.  The older trees do not have such pronounced striping.  Three-pronged leaves turn gentle yellow in the fall.  Various animals such as porcupines, beavers, and deer feed on the saplings and  the bark.
