Herbaceous perennial blooming in spring every few years. In most colonies, the majority of plants are non-flowering. The reflexed yellow petals are often purplish beneath and the two large basal leaves are heavily mottled with brown and have trout-like spots.

Common in moist woodlands and rich slopes.
