Characteristics
Tree singe trunk with some lower branches and a round, irregular crown
Leaves simple, alternate, oval to triangular with a blunt tip; large teeth, upper surface waxy
Bark lower bark gra in color with furrows and thick ridges; upper bark pale green to white and smooth
Flower a catkin, 4 to 5 in long; male and female flowers grow on separate trees; male catkins reddish, female catkins greenish
Fruit composed of many tiny narrow capsules that split open into two parts to release cottony seeds
