A shallow-rooted tree of mountaneous regions often growing in pure stands.  Cones start producing at around 20 years with maximum production occuring later.  This spruce grows up to 20m tall and lives 300 to 400 years.

Grows in rocky soils on steep slopes, mountains and ridges

Mostly found in north-eastern part of the state in the Appalachian mountains and other mountaneous places.

Needles  single, stiff with pointed tip, yellow-green in color with white stripes

Bark  reddish-brown with numerous small scales

Cone  green when young, becoming reddish-brown at maturity; cylindrical tapering to a round tip
