Picea rubens red spruce
A shallow-rooted tree of mountaneous regions often growing in pure stands. Cones start producing at around 20 years with maximum production occuring later. Large seed crops occur every 4-6 years. This spruce grows up to 21 m tall and lives 300 to 400 years.
Habitat & Range
Grows in rocky soils on steep slopes, mountains and ridges; moist/acidic soils
Mostly found in north-eastern part of the state in the Appalachian mountains and other mountaneous places.

Characteristics
Tree trunk single & straight, narrow-pointed tip, medium-sized tree
Needles single, stiff with pointed tip, yellow-green in color with white stripes
Bark reddish-brown with numerous small scales
Seed Cones green when young, becoming reddish-brown at maturity; cylindrical tapering to a round tip
Height 50-70 feet
Fall Color evergreen
Age 300-400 yrs
