Agrimonies are herbaceous, often hairy perennials with generally upright, mostly unbranched stems. Leaves are pinnately compound with larger leaflets interspersed with smaller ones along the rachis. Flowers occur in spike-like racemes with yellow petals. Hypanthium is top-shaped and covered with a double row of hooked prickles.
