A shrub up to 6 feet high and 12 feet wide, forming broad patches.  Erect, without thorns, leaves are large, maple-like with 5 lobes, with rose-lavender flowers. When new branches develop, they have bristly hairs.

Grows in forest, woodlands, talus and rocky slopes.

Present throughout the state.

Flowers  large, fragrant, pink-rose-purple, occurring either singly or in a cluster.

Leaves  alternate, with 5 lobes, dark green turning pale yellow in the fall.

Fruit  red, broadly-rounded berry.
